Church of the Month (June 2023)

The church of St Catherine, Cossall, is the featured church for June 2023. The small village of Cossall is 9 km (6 miles) north-west of Nottingham.

The church comprises a west tower with spire, clerestoried nave with north and south aisles, south porch, and chancel with north vestry.

The low two-stage tower is embattled and unbuttressed and dates from the 13th century.  The short octagonal spire may be of the late 14th century and has a tier of lucarnes. An unusual feature is the lenticular west window with cusped quatrefoils and daggers which may date from the 19th century.

The church underwent a major restoration in 1842-3 funded by the rector. The work included the addition of a north aisle.  Old stone was used for rebuilding the chancel and clerestory.

The Willoughby family vault is located under the chancel floor and was examined and recorded in 1999 during archaeological investigations inside the church.

The octagonal stone font is 15th century with panelled battement design, set on an octagonal base with quatrefoil panels. Immediately below the panelled battlement are interesting grotesque carvings of what appear to be animal and human faces, and foliage.

There is stained glass from the early 15th century in a south window that depicts St Catherine.

By the entrance to the churchyard is a marble grave marker to three men of Cossall who fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Only one returned and is buried here.

Further information on the church can be found at the Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project website.
