Church of the Month (February 2022)

The church of All Saints, Mattersey, is the featured church for February 2022. The village of Mattersey is located about 8 km north of Retford.

The church consists of a chancel, nave, north and south aisles with north chapel and south vestry, south porch and west tower. It is largely of the 14th century with some 13th century work inside and was restored in 1865-66 probably by the architect C. J. Neale.

The two 3-bay arcades date from the 14th century.

The chapel at the east end of the north aisle is from the early 13th century. The east window of the chapel contain fragments of medieval window glass and may depict the head of St Helena and part of her robe. It has been suggested the glass comes from Mattersey Priory.

The most significant interior features are the two carved stone panels of c.1325. One depicts St Martin and the Beggar, the other shows St Helena finding the True Cross. They were found under the chancel floor in the late 19th century and may have come from Mattersey Priory.

A stained glass window in the south aisle wall is dedicated to the three sons of William and Charlotte Huntriss who died while serving as soldiers during the First World War.
