The church of St Mary, Westwood, is the featured church for November 2024. The small village of Westwood is 13 km (8 miles) south-west of Mansfield.
Although burials and marriages have taken place here since the early 20th century Westwood St Mary has never been consecrated as a parish church, and remains a chapel of ease of Selston.
St Mary’s is a plain, brick building with a tiled roof and details in Matlock stone. It consists of nave, chancel, north and south transepts, and a small south porch with timber upper parts. There is a bell turret over chancel arch.
The church was built in 1898-99 to a design by the Derby architect, Percy Heylyn Currey. The architect’s drawings show that the church was intended to have a tower and a spire, but these were not built.
The 5-light east window portrays the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven and was installed in June 1915. It is by Heaton, Butler, and Bayne, of London.
A window in the north wall is also by Heaton, Butler and Bayne and was installed in memory of the men of Westwood who gave their lives in World War I.
Further information on the church can be found at the Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project website.
