Church of the Month (March 2023)

The church of All Saints, Thrumpton, is the featured church for March 2023. The small village of Thrumpton is 11 km (6.8 miles) south-west of Nottingham.

The church comprises a west tower, nave, north organ chamber and vestry and chancel.

The 13th century tower is of two stages, embattled and unbuttressed.  The chancel arch and tower arch are of a similar date.

The church underwent a major restoration in 1871 supervised by the architect, G. E. Street. Street was also responsible for the alabaster reredos representing the crucifixion of Christ, the stone pulpit, the organ case and font.

The stained glass in the east window is by John Hardman & Co. of Birmingham and depicts Christ surrounded by all the saints. The six windows in the nave are also probably by Hardman.

The most impressive memorial in the church is one to Gervase Pigot who died in 1669. The monument is on the south wall of the chancel and consists of ‘a large inscription tablet surmounted by a band of shields. Either side are single angels supported on corbels, these hold back curtains over the inscription. Apron decorated with a stylised tree and carved fruit.’

First World War memorial

The striking war memorial is built into the north wall of the nave and is in the form of a tomb recess containing an effigy of a recumbent First World War soldier.

Further information on the church can be found at the Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project website.
